Email Marketing Can Be an Effective Tool When Executed Properly

Email marketing seems like a simple and cost effective way to reach a large group of potential customers. And the truth is, email marketing can be very effective. If, and only if, the people receiving your emails actually open your message and read it. We are so bombarded today with email marketing messages from all sectors of business that actually taking the time to open one and consider what it says is not automatic. There are some things you can to do ensure that your email marketing campaign is not a waste of time and effort. This applies to both business-to-business email and business-to-consumer email marketing.

Most people think go email marketing as junk mail gone electronic. This is pretty much what it is too. You don’t open every piece of hardcopy junk mail that you receive so it’s not realistic to think that people will open every piece of junk email they get either. You only open those messages that seem to offer you something you want and need and most of us decide whether or not that is the case with the very first impression.

The first impression your email marketing campaign has the chance to give is your email address and the subject line. You only have a matter of seconds to catch an individual’s attention. If your email address starts with info or admin chances are that you won’t even make it past the spam filter. Your email marketing messages should be addressed from a real live person or a business name. But what should you say in the subject line? This line needs to be provocative enough to catch the recipient’s attention but not be too over the top. Here’s where art meets science in the realm of email marketing. Your subject line should be as specific as possible but not be too sales-y or pushy. This is not necessarily easy. Take your time. Write your line then let it sit for awhile. Go back and try to look at it with an objective eye. Would you open an email marketing piece with this subject line?

Now it comes the body of your message, your best bet is to keep your email marketing message brief and to the point. Don’t make your readers work for the payoff. Tell them what you want them to know as concisely as possible. Assuming they have opted to receive this message they have a good impression of you already so don’t waste a lot of valuable real estate talking about your company. Make it clear what you are offering and what you want them to do.

What you want them to do is an important part of your email marketing message. Make sure you are clear on what you are asking the reader to do. Give them your request clearly. Are you expecting them to buy something or do something? Be straightforward.

Regardless of what type of email marketing you are conducting your message needs to be well written, compelling, and straightforward. Make sure your readers know what you want them to do and don’t make them work to get to the point. Email marketing can be and effective tool when executed properly. Put yourself in the reader’s place and see how you would react. If you have constructed your message well you will get a payoff.
